The shooting of Vijay’s upcoming film ‘Azhagiya Tamizh Magan’ has been progressing at a very brisk pace in Chennai. Vijay said that the shooting is going on very well and that the movie would be a good entertainer for all his fans. Our VFN team decided to meet up with Vijay at the shooting spot of ‘Azhagiya Tamizh Magan’ for a small interview for which Vijay readily obliged. Here are some excerpts from the interview with Vijay by VFN team

The 175th day function of Pokkiri was a roaring success and was celebrated in a very grand manner. What are your thoughts about the function?

Vijay: I have a lot of memories from the function that I will cherish forever. My fans have given me everything that I have ever wished for, including the title ILAYATHALAPATHY. I felt that I should celebrate the success of Pokkiri along with my fans because they have made the film such a big success. I conveyed this idea to the producer Ramesh Babu who organized this function in a very efficient manner along with my father SA Chandrasekar and with my PRO Mr. PT Selvakumar.

My fans had come from various parts of Tamil Nadu for this function and elevated the function to great heights. I am thankful to them for making the function a big success. The moment that I will always cherish is the applause and the ovation that I received when I came to the venue for the function. The fans applauded the performances of all the artistes who had performed on stage and gave a great welcome to all the artistes who had come to the function. All these applause and appreciation of the fans becomes the biggest energy for any artist. My fans are what I consider as the gift that God has given to me.

The biggest highlight of the silver jubilee function of Pokkiri was the dance performance by the physically challenged children under the guidance of Dance master Lawrence. What are your thoughts on that?

Vijay: I had asked my father to personally invite Lawrence to bring the children and perform with them during this function. When I saw their performance on the stage, a big wave of happiness swept through my heart. I was totally mesmerized seeing that performance. I am sure that their performance was a God sent gift to them. When Lawrence told in his speech that he wanted me to dance on stage, I was initially shocked. But when he asked me to dance specially for those children who had performed on stage, I was really touched. I wanted to make those children happy and so I decided to dance on stage. The happiness on the faces of those children is invaluable.

Please tell us something about Azhagiya Tamizh Magan?

Vijay: The shoot for Azhagiya Tamizh Magan is going on at a very brisk pace. We recently shot for a song at Phuket Islands featuring myself and Namitha. There are a few more songs to be shot for this movie. This movie has certainly been a different journey for me in my film career.

I want to tell one very important thing to my fans. “Do not have big expectations for this movie”. The fans might come to this movie expecting a Pokkiri or Ghilli or Thirupachi. It is better to come to this movie without any pre-conceived hype and expectations. I am sure that all my fans will be fulfilled with this movie if they come without many expectations.

Please tell us something about your next film after ATM?

Vijay: As you all know, Dharani Sir will be the director of my next film after Azhagiya Tamizh Magan. Discussions about my next film are going on right now with the concerned people. I am very eager to work in this film and I am waiting for the shooting to commence soon.

Your costumes in Azhagiya Tamizh Magan have been the talk of the town. How do you manage to get such beautiful costumes in your films?

Vijay: After my marriage, my style of costumes has changed. My wife Sangeetha has been instrumental in suggesting different styles of costumes to my costume designer Mr. Rajendran who has been incorporating her ideas into designing my costumes. Now, Nalini Sriram who has been designing my costumes for Pokkiri and now Azhagiya Tamizh Magan also has been giving a lot of different costumes which have been really good. Costumes have always played a major highlight in my recent films.

We thank Vijay for taking his precious time off to interact with us and patiently answer our questions.

Chennai: The producers of this year’s surprise hit film ‘Chennai-600028’ are gearing up to celebrate the movie’s 100th day by conducting a gully cricket tournament.

The film’s producer-director duo S.P.B. Charan and Venkat Prabhu managed to capture the audience’s hearts with their realistic take on gully cricket. The movie even managed to hold its own against the ‘Sivaji’ wave and the news is that ‘Superstar’ Rajnikant too had appreciated the movie.

Now, as the film’s 100th day nears, the ‘Chennai-600028’ team has organised a gully cricket tournament featuring 32 teams from across the State.

The 10-overs-innings matches would be held from August 2 to August 4 on the YMCA grounds in Nandanam. The winning team will get Rs.25,000 and a Gully Cricket Cup.

The runners up will get Rs.10,000.

The winners will also get an opportunity to play against the star team of ‘Chennai-600028’ on August 4, forming part of the 100th day celebration of the movie.

The function will be inaugurated by the Minister of Environment and Sports, T.P.M. Mohideen Khan, and the Mayor will be the chief guest.

S.P.B. Charan said he was happy to be part of the film. “We have worked hard and will certainly enjoy each and every moment of the function. Some of the top stars and cricket players from this part of the city are expected to grace the occasion.”

Arjun in Marudamalai

After what seemed to have been a brief sabbatical from movies, Arjun will soon be back with what he does best. Flexing his muscles onscreen against baddies that is. His Rs. 6.5 crore budget Marudamalai, produced by Oscar films Ravichandran, is all set to hit the screens in the near future. The jaw-dropping stunt scenes of the movie are said to be the highlights.

However, as the movie is now wrapped up for release and when the dubbing is over, Arjun seems far from convinced that his stunt scenes alone are the highlights of the movie. Looks like Arjun has qualms that his stunts will ever outperform Vadivelu’s comic track. “I am sure this movie is going to be branded as Vadivelu’s movie rather than mine,” Arjun was quoted as saying on a lighter vein.

Well Arjun, we will know soon.

Veerappu Movie Review

Veerappu

Cast: Sundar C, Gopika, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Santhanam, Thejashree

Direction: Badri

Music: D Imman

Production: Krishnamoorthy Vijayakumar, Sujatha Vijayakumar

When a hero's first film is a hit it is only natural for the viewers to expect the same from his next film too. In other words, there is a pressure of sorts on the actor to live up to this expectation. Director Sundar C after successfully debuting as a hero in Thalainagaram returns to silver screen in the same capacity in Veerappu and has tried his best to live up to this expectation. The movie is a remake of the yesteryear Malayalam classic Spatikam.

Veerappu is all about the relationship between a strict father and his rogue son. The father played by Prakash Raj is a Maths teacher who wants his son to become a brilliant mathematician. His son Sundar C is very good in all the subjects except the one with numbers.

Father tries too hard to make him a mathematics genius whereas the son is more into science and inventions. Prakash Raj breaks one of the inventions that his son creates, compares him with another boy. The fiery youngster completely irked by his dad's innuendo and not knowing to streamline his anger lands a compass on the hands of the other student and lands himself in jail as per his father's request.

This event becomes the turning point in the life of this boy who becomes a desperado. Now his father does not even allow him to enter the house and like in all Tamil films, the hero finds solace in the slender shoulders of his school mate Gopika who brings out the latent talents from him and needless to say falls in love with him. Meanwhile Prakash Raj is framed for a murder and is arrested. How Sundar C solves this mystery and helps his father forms the rest of the story.

Debutant director Badri, has nothing new to offer for the paying public and the screenplay runs in a set predictable path. Some twists and turns in the storyline could have helped in a big way. But the climax sequence where the hero intelligently devices a plan to make the villain bring out of the truth has been well conceptualized and one can find Sundar's touch in it

Sundar C is the life and blood of this enterprise and he has done a commendable job. His acting and body languages has improved a lot and can very well give the action heroes a run for their money. Prakash Raj makes it look so easy; he has portrayed the strict father in many other films too and here also does it with total perfection. There is not much scope for acting for Gopika and she does her part well. Tejashri comes and goes mechanically. Vivek and Santhanam have come up with a good comical performance and are the only saving grace of this otherwise emotional masala potboiler.

Music by Imman is repetitive and nothing new to offer.Overall the movie leaves you with a déjà vu feel. It is the same old wine in the same old jar and would find it difficult to make an impact at the box-office.
