Tholaipesi Movie Review

Tholaipesi

Cast: Vikramadithya, Priyanka, Divya, Arthi, Karunaas

Direction: K. Paneerselvam

Music: S. Shanthakumar

Production: Blue Waters Movie Makers

Tholaipesi is a very interesting name and one would hope to see a neat and interesting movie and that too a thriller. But a heavy dosage of melodrama is what one gets to witness and the intelligence of the title stops just with it.

Vikramaditya of whistle fame is the son of a rich man and he thinks that possessing a cell phone could change the life of a person completely. He uses his phone mainly to flirt around with the fairer sex. His rich dad gets him married off to Priyanka but the son never gets rid of his cell phone. He starts having an affair with a girl called Divya and when his wife Priyanka gets to know about this through the phone (Tholaipesi) she leaves him in a fit of rage.

Meanwhile he comes across another girl Arthi who brings the best out from him and in the process desires to marry him. The rest of the story is about whether Priyanka and Vikramaditya unite or whether he chooses Divya or whether Vikramaditya decides to spend the rest of his life with the girl (Arthi) who reforms him and what happens to the

Though the concept is interesting, the lack of depth in the story and the ambiguous screenplay plays spoilsport. Director K Paneerselvam’s inexperience is revealed when many scenes end abruptly.

In the acting department Vikramaditya needs to work on his emotions, but plays the romantic part pretty well. Priyanka who was last seen in Veyil does a good job and Nizhalgal Ravi suffers from proper characterization. Karunas does not impress this time and none of the other actors register an impact.

The technical department also has nothing special to boast of as the cinematography or the music department is just plain.

On the whole the movie is a non starter due to improper marketing which is very much needed for such a movie. This is a cell phone without a sim card.

Kuruvi is Vijay's Future Movie?

Vijay-Dharani combination which gave a super hit movie Ghilli, is back together once again for Kuruvi. Usually Kuruvi or Pura is used as a code word for illegal immigrants. As the title of the movie indicates, its storyline revolves around a youth who lands in Singapore without proper documents and to add to his woes, the police also find that he has smuggled goods in his possession.
The hero's search for the villains and how he gets out of the mess forms the rest of the story.

Kuruvi will also be a fast paced movie just like Ghilli, reliable sources say. This project is being produced by Udhayanidhi, grandson of Chief Minister Karunanidhi. With Vidya Sagar scoring the music, let's hope that he gives us another smashing hit like "Appadi Podu".

Arya Movie Review, Pictures, Gallery

Arya

Cast: Madhavan, Bhavana, Prakash Raj, Tejashree, Vadivelu

Direction: Balasekaran

Music: Manisharma

Production: Manoj Kumar

Arya the Maddy- Bhavana starrer which was in the cans for a long time is finally out. This film directed by Balasekaran (love today and Thulli Thirinda Kaalam) with Madhavan in the lead role had raised a lot of expectations. But unfortunately the film fails the viewers with its age old theme and treatment of the script.

For all those analytical minds and logical brains, please leave your logical reasoning at the parking lot and then enter the theatre. You may be spared off few troubles.

Prakash Raj is a local thug who will do anything for his sister Bhavana who is as equally spoilt as her brother. To this duo, means do not matter and only ends are of concern.

This trait gets demonstrated when Prakash Raj kills a namesake of his sister who has obtained medical college admission through merit to place his sister Bhavana and that too in the presence of education minister. Do not question the system or the logic…

In the college, Bhavana, despite being a fresher, rules the campus and the students do not want to rub her on the wrong side lest they would antagonize her brother. At his juncture enters our hero Maddy who is a final year student transferred from Coimbatore and who is a law abiding character but can rise against any evil (naturally!!).

Expectantly, Bhavana and Maddy clash in a couple of instances and the former gets attracted to Maddy’s forthright character and is keen to get married to him. When this news reaches her brother, he approaches Maddy to become his brother-in-law by marrying his sister, but much to his dismay, Maddy declines the offer saying that he cannot marry a rowdy’s sister as they do not belong to the same rung in the social setup. This infuriates Prakash Raj and the rest of the story deals with his attempts to convert the ‘good boy Maddy’ to a desperado in a comical fashion to equalize their ‘social inequality’.

There are some scenes which entertain like the one where Prakash Raj decides to send the Collector and then an Inspector to convince Madhavan to get married to Bhavana. But unfortunately such sparks are a rarity in Arya.

The film travels on expected path and there are no twists or turns anywhere. It lacks in tight screenplay and coherent narration. There are too many jumps and scenes end abruptly leaving the viewer perplexed. Climax is an absolute let down in Arya. It even makes one wonder how Madhavan has accepted such a project. Though he looks as smashing as ever, there is something missing in his performance. Bhavana appeals and shines on and off. Prakash Raj like always gives his best and in fact the film starts breathing only after his entry. Tejashri comes and goes. Vadivelu satisfies his fans and Ponnambalam does a good cameo.

Pallikoodam Movie Review

Pallikoodam

Cast: Naren, Sneha, Thangar Bachchan, Shreya Reddy, Seeman

Direction: Thangar Bachchan

Music: Bharadwaj

Production: Vishwas Sundar

In the Thankar Bachaan’s genre of movie making, emotions play hide and seek between the characters with an undertone. The subtlety of such characterization of feelings has always remained the success quotient for him. Pallikoodam follows the same genre Azhagi paved way for, only with a tad different plot.

The movie is about a school that faces troubles with the owner of the land and how the characters try and get help from the old students to prevent the school from being seized. Thus starts this nostalgic emotional ride. It’s about four classmates Vetrivel, Muthu, Kumaraswami and Kokila who had studied at that school and how the school changes their life forever.

Vetrivel, a son of a potter, is the most intelligent of the lot and loves Kokila who is the daughter of a rich Jamindar who owns the school land. And their common friends are Muthu and Kumaraswami. Kumaraswami, very bad at studies, avoids school; however, his father makes all efforts to send him back to school and succeeds in doing so.

A young and beautiful Doctor, Jhansi (Shreya) arrives at the village and befriends the foursome. Jhansi slowly becomes the godfather figure to all the four. And when Muthu loses his father and becomes an orphan, Jhansi takes him into his custody. Vetrivel and Kokila’s love is made public and the villagers blame Jhansi. They throw her out of the Village and Muthu accompanies her.

What follows is the disentanglement of the plot on the plight of Jhansi, Muthu, Kumaraswami, Vetrivel, and Kokila. Eventually the rest of the story and the climax also unravel whether the school escapes the wrath of the landowner.

The movie is based on a novel “Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal” which is immaculately translated into the big screen by Thankar Bhachan who is also taking care of the cinematography, screenplay, and direction besides playing a character in the film. Cinematography has little to talk about but Thankar scores with his screenplay, direction and acting.

There are a few eyesores like the opening scene where students sing the national anthem in the rain. The patriotic angle is very much appreciable, however, it doesn’t need any emphasis and proves to be tad unrealistic.

Also, the duet between the young Vetrivel and young Kokila is a total let down. But the movie is successful in bringing out the nostalgic feeling. Some of the scenes like the meeting of Kumaraswami, who is a farmer now; meeting Vetrivel - the collector, are directed very well.

The performance in the movie is of high order and all the actors compete with one another for the glory. Naren as Vetrivel has done a wonderful job. Sneha as Kokila steals every heart with her simplicity, and Thankar Bachaan as Kumaraswamy lives his part. Shreya Reddy as Jhansi impresses everyone with her dignified acting. Seeman as Muthu makes a confident debut. The actor who comes as the younger Kumaraswamy is a revelation with his superb comic timing and quick wit. The scene in which he drops his pen to see Shreya’s legs will surely bring the house down.

Baradwaj’s music is soothing to the ears especially the “Meendum Pallikoodam pogalam” track, which lingers in one’s heart long after the leaving the theatre. Gana Ulaganathan comes up with a remix of the old song “Nanamoo” which can achieve a hit status if marketed properly. Sathish does a good job as the Editor but the pace of the movie drops in the second half, which if taken care of, would have made a big difference in the outcome of the movie.

Overall the movie is well made and will be lapped up by the urban audience. If you thought Azhagi was a fantastic effort, chances are that you would have the same feeling with Tahnkar Bachaan’s new effort as well. Besides, the emotional aspect of the movie is sure to go down well with the female audience.

Anbalaya Prabhakaran is producing Pazhaniappa Kalloori after a long hiatus. This film, which has college in the backdrop has sex bomb Shakeela playing a prominent role. And she runs a tea stall in front of a college in the film.

At first Sivakasi Jayalakshmi was approached for the role but she declined. So Shakeela stepped into her shoes. In the film, she plays the role of a lady who runs a tea stall in front of a college. She is expected to look hot in this film too. Its shooting is currently progressing in Tarangambadi near Mayiladuthurai.
